Quick start

  1. Choose how many moves each side will plan using the Longview selector (1 through 5).
  2. Choose Human, Easy, Medium, or Hard for White and Black.
  3. Select a piece and a highlighted destination. Continue until the side’s plan is complete.
  4. After both sides finish, moves execute White #1, Black #1, White #2, Black #2, and so on.

If an earlier action changes the board and makes a later queued move illegal, the later move is skipped. This is an intentional part of Longview Chess.

Frequently asked questions

What ends a game?

Checkmate, stalemate, king capture, insufficient material, threefold repetition, and the fifty-move rule are supported. Online players may also resign or forfeit on timeout.

Can I choose a promotion piece?

Yes. When planning a promotion, choose queen, rook, bishop, or knight. The choice is preserved in an Online Match.

Does the game work offline?

Local Human and AI games work offline on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. On Apple devices, Game Center features require an internet connection and a signed-in Game Center account.

Is Online Match available on Android?

Not yet. The Android version currently supports local Human and AI games. Apple Game Center matches are limited to iPhone and iPad, and cross-platform online play is still in development.

Is there chat or a Longview account?

No. The app has no chat and no separate Longview Chess account system.

Are queued online plans secret?

The normal interface does not show an opponent’s queued moves while waiting. The protocol is not advertised as cryptographic commit-and-reveal security.

How do I erase local data?

Tap the information button, choose Privacy & Credits, then Clear Local Data. This does not delete Apple Game Center matches.

Online Match troubleshooting for iPhone and iPad

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to Game Center in iOS or iPadOS Settings.
  2. Confirm that the device has a working internet connection.
  3. Return to Longview Chess, tap Online, and choose Refresh or Resume Match.
  4. If the problem continues, restart the app and check Apple’s service status.
